La Boca Buenos Aires

General

Buenos Aires is one of the largest cities in Latin America and offers a wide range of social and cultural activities. The city is generally considered a safe city but all the normal precautions for travelling to an unknown large city apply of course. Buenos Aires is an excellent gateway to explore Latin America and has become very popular as a destination to learn Spanish.

How to get there

The international airport of Buenos Aires is called Ezeiza (airport code: EZE) and is located 35 km to the south of the city centre. Various airlines fly here from North American (American Airlines) and Europe (Iberia, Air France, Lufthansa).

Money
The Argentina currency is the $ (peso) and you can check your currency rates here. Although you can pay in most places with dollars and Euros, we suggest that you exchange enough cash for your expenses. There are plenty of ATMs where you will be able to take money from.

Argentina Power Supply
Argentina electricity supply is 220 volts

Phone calls:
Area code for Argentina is 54. If you have to make a phone call to Buenos Aires you will have to dial 11 after 54. If you are calling a mobile phone you have to dial a 9 between 54 and 11.

Example:
Calling to a regular phone: 00 54 11 + number
Mobile phone: 00 54 9 11 + number

Daily expenses
Because of the recent devaluation of the Peso living in Buenos Aires has become very cheap for American and European tourists. Here are some facts

Metro ticket: € 0,24
Lunch (menú del día): €3,00
Sandwich + drink: €1,00
Happy hour beer: €1,00
Dinner at a cool restaurant (2 people): €18,00
Cinema entrance – weekdays: €1,50
Cinema entrance – weekends: €2,50

Moving around town
There are several ways of moving around town: subtes (metro), colectivos (buses), trains, taxis, radio taxis and remises. Taking a taxi in Buenos Aires is easy. There are hundreds of them everywhere and it is not necessary to go to a taxi stop. You just raise your hand when you see a taxi and he will stop.
