Q: What's it all about?
A: If you are a multi-billionaire and you've run out of
ideas to spend money on, there is hope. You invest or
buy an America's Cup sailing team. Once every so
many years the fastest sail boats come together to
decide who's the best. It's happening in Valencia, right
now.
Q: Who's racing?
A: The winner of 2003 was a Swiss (!) boat called
Alinghi. Since earlier this year, in the waters of
Valencia, other contenders have been racing against
each other to decide who can challenge Alinghi in the
finals. Team New Zealand won that honour.
Q: What is the race format?
A: The final is a "best of nine" i.e. who ever wins the
first 5 races is the new Champion and can decide
where the next races are held. The score today stands
at 2 wins each.
Q: How exciting can it be to watch (yawn)?
A: If you're Swiss or Kiwi (New Zealander), you don't
care. TV technology showing racing distances and
advantages make this much more exciting to watch
then it used to be.
So don't miss the next finals of the America's Cup
Valencia 2007. Watch it on TV or follow it on
the official website.
