Babylon Idiomas Newsletter

Hola Babylonian,

Valencia is an amazing city with more than 2000 years of history. This year, it will be in the spotlight as the host of the America's Cup 2007.

The city is large enough to have everything on offer but small enough to feel at home very easily. It is also not (yet) very touristy so you'll have no problem making Spanish friends and improving your language skills with the locals!

Whatever your reason may be to choose Valencia as your destination, you will not be disappointed.

Steven Muller - Director

Q: What is the America's Cup?

A: Very, very fast sailing America's Cup

In 1851, a number of sailing boats raced around the Isle of Wight in southern England in a new race called "The Hundred Pounds Cup". The cup was however renamed after the boat that won the race, the "America" from the New York Yacht Club.

Ever since, sailing nations have put forward their fastest sailng boat once every so many years to race against each other making the America's Cup one of the oldest sporting events still held today.

The last race in 2003 was won by Team Alinghi from...Switzerland. The host normally organizes the next event but since Switzerland has lots of mountains and no sea, Valencia was chosen to host the cup.

12 teams are present this year and Alinghi the winner is directly placed for the final. This means that the 11 chalengers start a knock out competition (like a tennis tournament) on the 16th of April until 1 challenger is left for the final that starts on the 23rd of June. Come join the fun!

Overview of Valencia

The Romans knew what they were doing Atlas Valencia

The area of Valencia has been populated for thousands of years since it is fertile land. The Romans selected the territory as retirement country for their soldiers. Each soldier was given a plot of land as their pension payment.

These soldiers brought a new grain called "rice" with them from their journeys in Minor Asia and created a dish that is famous today: the paella. The original paella was made of the produce that was found there: snails, eel and rabbit.

The next major settlement came with the Moors from Northern Africa in the 8th century until the city was retaken by King Jaume I in 1238 and declared an independent kingdom. Ever since, the city and the region around it have had their own separate identity which still can be felt today.

The Cathedral of Valencia is one of the oldest and most renowned in the world. The city centre with its winding little streets has remained relatively unchanged since the middle ages. The city has a very busy calendar of traditional processions and festivities that go back hundreds of years.

But Valencia is not just about history; it is also one of the liveliest cities in Spain with a large student population. Another surprising aspect of Valencia is its world class architecture thanks to one of the top architects in the world called Santiago Calatrava who was born there. Check out the amazing Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias to see what we mean.

Our school is located right in the city centre within walking distance from all the attractions. Come discover Valencia, it is a great place to learn Spanish!

Q: Will there be a group for my level?

A: Yes, from absolute beginners to proficiency level Question

Babylon Idiomas recognizes 6 different levels of Spanish. This is in accordance with a framework set up by the European Union to make it easier for students from different countries to compare their language skills.

If you are an absolute beginner, then you start of course in a group with other beginners. If you already speak Spanish (even if it is only a little), then you will be asked to take a level test on your first day at school.

The test consists of a written part and an oral part with one of our teachers. With these results, you will then be placed in a group that has the same level as you.

If you already speak (a little) Spanish, then new courses start every Monday. If you are an absolute beginner, then new courses start at least twice per month.
