Babylon Idiomas Newsletter
Information about Spanish Courses
|
| |
Hola Babylonian,
Welcome to our April newsletter. Springtime has
arrived in Spain and our schools are getting busier
every week with sun-seeking students. Do not fear
the heat though...all our classrooms have
airconditioning!
In this boletín we'd like to give you some information about our various locations and
provide
you with some useful Spanish vocabulary.
Let us know if there is anything we can do to make
your Spanish course a huge success: we are here to
help.

The Beaches of Barcelona |
|
| |
|
Now you see them...Now you don't
It may be difficult to believe but until 14 years
ago, Barcelona did not really have any beaches. The
city was built with its back against the sea and the
seafront was only used for the harbour and factories.
This all changed when Barcelona won the right to
organise the Olympic Games of 1992. The city used
this opportunity to massively restructure the
infrastructure and open up the sea front. The
Olympic village was built next to the sea and
Barcelona now counts more than 6 kilometers of beaches.
The most famous beaches are Barceloneta and Bogatell
where it can get very busy. If you want to have more
room for yourself, just walk up 15 minutes to the
North away from the Olympic Harbour and you'll have
a lot more privacy.
The beaches are not natural beaches, that is to say,
the currents and the wind erode the beaches every
winter. So every spring hundreds of trucks filled
with sand make their way to the beach to remodel the
coastline so that everyone can put on their swimming
costume to enjoy the sun and the sea!

Interview with our teacher Lourdes in Valencia |
|
| |
|
A Sevillana on the Mediterranean Coast
Q: You are originally from Seville; why did
you choose to live in Valencia?
A: I
wanted to live somewhere else in Spain
and when I got to know Valencia I really liked it.
The people are really open-minded, welcoming and
have a good sense of humour - and it's near the sea!
Q: What makes your job
interesting?
A: I love to interact with
people, to get to
know different cultures and appreciate varying
backgrounds. It gives me great satisfaction to
teach people the Spanish language and culture. For
example; a student from the USA started her course a
few weeks ago, and didn´t know a word of Spanish.
However, today I can have a conversation with her in
Spanish. I love to see this kind of progress with
students.
Q: Did you work anywhere else before Babylon
Idiomas?
A: Yes I have been working in
South America -
Peru, Cuba, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile. And I got to
understand the variety and richness of Hispanic
culture, which I try to transmit in my Spanish
classes right now.
Q: What is the best way to learn
Spanish?
A: First of all, use the Spanish
language as
much as you can, especially outside of school.
Instead of going to the supermarket, choose to do
your shopping in the Mercado Central. This way, you
will interact with the local people and you also
experience the Spanish culture firsthand! If you
live with other international students, try to use
Spanish as a common language
Un abrazo y good luck!

Learn the Flamenco in Sevilla |
|
| |
|
Olé
Seville is the heart of Flamenco and a Spanish +
Flamenco course is a great way to combine two
exciting studies.
Flamenco is made up of the song (cante), the dance
(baile), the guitar (toque) and extra elements of
rhythmic accompaniment, such as handclapping
(palmas), finger snapping (pitos), tongue clicking
and even knuckle bashing on a tabletop. Castanets -
a Spanish-classical influence - are also played in
some dances and performers often shout words of
encouragement known as jaleo.
There are different
types of songs like bulerěas , fandango, colombiana,
soleŕ, alegrěas, sevillanas, tangos etc.
Babylon Idiomas Sevilla works together with one of
the most renowned Flamenco academies in the city.
The program consists of the regular 20 hours
intensive Spanish course + 5 hours of small group or
individual Flamenco dance classes.
We will launch a new Spanish + Flamenco program in
the very near future with less hours of Spanish
classes and more hours of Flamenco classes.
