¡Hola Babylonians!
Q: What daily budget do I need in Barcelona?
A: Barcelona is not an expensive city compared to other destinations in Western Europe but the gap between Spain and other countries has narrowed over the years. The following overview provides a guideline for typical expenses excluding your accommodation cost:
Breakfast: croissant + coffee: € 1.85
Lunch: sandwich (bocadillo) + drink: € 3.30 or
Lunch: menú del día: € 6.50
Dinner: grocery shopping: € 4 or
Dinner: "cheap & cheerful" restaurant: € 10
Transportation cost per day: € 1.25
Glass of wine / beer: € 1.25
Once you include other costs such as telephone card, entrance tickets to museums / cinema etc. a minimum daily allowance of € 15 is the bare minimum to survive on.

Coming up: the Babylon Idiomas Student Directory! |
|
|
Our alumni will receive this week an invitation to complete their profile in the Babylon Idiomas Student Directory. They can also comment on their experience here at the school and in Barcelona. These comments will be available in a new section on our website called "Ask the Student". We are slowly building a place on our website where alumni and new students can meet and exchange information. What do you think? Send an email to info@babylon-idiomas.com with your suggestions and comments! |

Barcelona - Where it all started part II |
|

|
William "the Hairy" (who ruled from 870 till 897) was the first of the so called Counts of Barcelona who oversaw the city develop as a mighty seafaring powerhouse. Catalonia grew even more in importance when count Raymond Berengar IV married the daughter of the neighbouring kingdom of Aragon thus creating in 1137 the Kingdom of Catalonia and Aragon. This heralded the glory years of Barcelona which lasted until 1479 when Aragon liaised itself with Castile effectively relegating Catalonia to 2nd tier cousin.
To understand the pride of Catalonians today and its special place in Spain, it is important to understand how powerful Barcelona was during this golden age. Its merchant fleet set the standard for Mediterranean seafaring, its territory at its zenith encompassed the Languedoc in France, Sardinia and Sicily. Catalan had become a very important language spoken by most in the western half of the Mediterranean.
It has been "downhill ever since" as one particular guidebook to Barcelona puts it cruelly. Next week we'll look in more detail at these golden years and how the city was governed. |
Correction: The Moors invaded Spain in 711 AD and not in the 6th century as was written by mistake in part I. Thank You Sam Khuri! |
