Issue #34

¿Qué?

¡Hola Babylonians!

Q: How are your classes structured?

A: Our intensive course offers 20 hours per week of Spanish classes, 4 hours per day either in the morning [09:30 - 13:30] or afternoon [16:00 - 20:00].

The 4 hours per day are split into 2 blocks of 2 hours. Each block is taught by a different teacher. This helps you to train your ear to different voices as well as keep energy and attention levels high! Typically, one block deals with grammar and the other blocks helps you apply the newly learned grammar in conversation or writing.

You'll be amazed how quickly you learn!

Any other questions? We're here to help!

Barcelona orientation and history

Barcelona is a fascinating large city but one that makes you feel at home at the same time. In the next newsletters we'll be helping you get a feel for the different neighbourhoods and areas in Barcelona. It helps to know a little bit of the history of Barcelona to understand its layout. At the heart of Barcelona is the Ciutat Vella or Gothic quarter that is one of the most impressive medieval city centres in Europe.

Barcelona and Catalonia have often been at war with its Spanish and French neighbours and its final defeat came on the 11th of September 1714 [the 11th of September is still celebrated as the Catalan holiday]. To contain Barcelona, Spanish and French forces established a garison next to the Ciutat Vella and the city was forbidden to grow beyond its boundaries. These restrictions were lifted in the late 19th century and led to the construction of the Eixample ("Expansion") area which connected the old city with villages like Gràcia, Sant Gervasi and Sarrià that today have become neighbourhoods within the city. Have a look here to see an overview of the city.
