A great way to learn Spanish and to maintain it when you’re back home is to buy a Spanish newspaper (el periódico). Keep yourself motivated by picking articles (el texto) that you are familiar with so that the context helps you to better understand the new vocabulary you are learning. If you do this on a regular basis, you’ll soon notice that your comprehension and vocabulary are improving significantly.
GENERAL: Of all the Spanish newspapers, there’s only one with a worldwide distribution which is El PaÃs (www.elpais.com). This newspaper is regarded as the quality standard in Spanish reporting, positioned slightly to the left of the political centre in Spain. It is also the largest paid for newspaper in terms of circulation in Spain. The other two national large newspapers are El Mundo and ABC which firmly sit in the conservative camp and have strong links with the catholic church in Spain.
REGIONAL: It is probably no surprise to see that the regions with a strong independent streak have their own large newspapers such as La Vanguardia and El Periódico in Catalonia, El Correo Bilbao in the Basque Country and La Voz de Galicia in the eponymous region.
FREE DISTRIBUTION: A differente category is formed by the newspaper which are distributed for free in all the main cities. The largest is called 20 Minutos (www.20minutos.es) which is an obvious reference to the low density of information it contains but certainly very suitable for Spanish language students. Other free newspapers of note are ADN and Qué.
SPORTS: The second largest paid for newspaper in Spain is Marca (www.marca.com) which is a daily sports newspaper, mainly dedicated to football. These sports newspapers do not hide their club preference so you will see the aforementioned publication as well as AS declare their daily love for Real Madrid wheres el Mundo Deportivo and Sport will tell you what Leo Messi ate last night.
BUSINESS: If you want to keep track of Spanish business then Expansión (www.expansion.com) is the newspaper for you. The other competitor in this field is called Cinco DÃas.
All the paid for general and sports newspapers are published seven days a week, 364 days per year. The only day missing being Easter Friday when no newspapers appear. The weekend issues (especially Sunday) have extra magazines and annexes for which you have to pay a little more than the weekly (entre semana) price.

Hi Steven,
I appreciate this info, but I was wondering if you could tell me how I might go about getting a copy of the El Pais newspaper. I live in St. Louis, MO. Would I have to order it from somewhere and have it mailed to me from within the States?
I can’t imagine being able to pick it up locally here in St. Louis, but perhaps it is here somewhere. I went and looked at the website, and, of course, it is all in Spanish, and my Spanish is not advanced enough to meander through that website and find the information I need about global distribution. I’m sorry, I just have no idea of how to go about getting a copy of that newspaper here in the States. Although I would certainly like to.
Thank you in advance,
David
